Wine Racks: Choosing The Right Wine Rack For You

Sunday, December 28th, 2008
John Thompson asked:

Wine racks have become something that just about anyone wants to purchase and have within their residence. They are offered in a wide variety of styles, shapes and dimensions to fit just about anyones specs.

Adding one to a residence can heighten the homes value and distinguish it from other homes. It can also help to keep wine fresh, undisturbed and easy to access when you need it. You dont have to be a wine lover to find the value in adding a wine rack of some sort to your residence.

Selection: Picking The Ideal Wine Rack For You

Since there are so many different kinds of wine racks to choose from, it makes sense that you would need a little help comprehending which is the Right one for you. Here are some of them and a little info that you need about each one.

Top Of The Line: The top of the line wine racks are those that can be custom assembled in a cellar of your home. These are magnificent choices for individuals who have room to add a room in a cool area of the residence and those that adore wine.

They can be custom built out of the wood types of your preference, fitted for the area that you have chosen and shaped in virtually any form that fits your needs. The bad news is that with any custom work you will also have to pay quite a bit more for it.

Metal Wine Racks: For a more fashionable way of displaying your wine, consider a metal wine rack. These are available in a wide range of sizes and can be used to display your wine in a lavish way, as you would other dcor within your home.

They are often purchased to stand on the floor or they can be purchased as counter top sitters as well. The number of bottles they will hold depends greatly on the size of the wine rack you purchase. Often, they can be purchased in the style you are after. The one drawback to these is that you will need to find a location, out of the way of children, to place it.

Hanging Wine Racks: To take care of that problem with room, you can add a wine rack to your wall or hang it from your ceiling. These are great choices when it comes to adding a little style to your kitchen.

Again, they come in a wide range of sizes and styles, depending on what you like. If you choose these, you will likely get less storage than you would any other method but if you only keep a few bottles on hand, this is ideal.

Environmental Controls: If you are a wine expert, you should consider investing in an environment controlling unit. If you were to build a wine racking system in a cellar, you would be able to add to it climate control. If you are looking for a way to control the environment in your kitchen, you can do this with a wine chest.

These fit under counters like your dishwasher can or they can be stored above the counter in smaller units. They are a critical appliance for your kitchen. These are much more costly than wine racking systems but can keep your wine at the best temperature.

Any and all wine racking systems can be bought online. You will find that custom made options as well as those that are a simple hanging racks are offered to you in the sizes and styles that you really want to have. Wine racks are an excellent choice for upgrading your home.

A toast to the perfect wine rack! Please visit our site for more information on metal wine rack products as well as other racks for storage needs.

What is the best way to store wine without a cellar?

Thursday, December 25th, 2008
Suzy-Q asked:

I have just started to collect wines. Rather buy expensive wine on sale. I kon’t know anything about wine, it just started calling to me. I don’t think I have had a glass of wine in 3 months. I do not have a wine cellar or wine rack. Should wine stand up or lay down during storage? What temperture? Should I keep it in the refridgerator? I love looking at the bottles. Have I become weird?

Any ideas on what to do with a wine rack in the bathroom?

Wednesday, December 24th, 2008
ADC asked:

I recently purchased a beautiful smaller wine rack. I couldn’t pass it up but it does not match my kitchen nor do I need the extra wine storage. So I thought I would use it in my bathroom (the colors and style match perfectly). I tried bath towels in the slots but they were to short and thin. I tried hand towels but they were to long and floppy. What design ideas could you provide? Or other folding techniques other than a message in a bottle type of roll up for the towels? Thanks!

Wall Mounted Wine Rack for Your Viewing Pleasure

Monday, December 15th, 2008
Barbara Tobiasz asked:

Wine has been a delectable part of history and more and more people have discovered the fun in collecting wines from the United States to abroad. Wall mounted wine racks helps the homeowner display their collection for their viewing pleasure and share this passion with others. For people that love wine as well as decorating their homes a hanging wine rack can greatly add to the aesthetics of any room.

Wall mounted wine racks will add distinction and flair to your walls. They can be hung on any wall in any room. They give your walls that attractive sophisticated look for an extra decorative touch and flair. You need to determine which wine rack fits in with your décor and expresses you as a wine connoisseur.

For today’s lifestyle it is important to have an attractive and durable wine rack storage system. If you are interested in growing your wine collection you would not want to hide it behind your kitchen cabinet. Before you purchase one there are some basic things you need to understand regarding wine storage. This pertains to temperature, humidity and light to do it right.

The proper storage temperature is between fifty and sixty degrees. This temperature enables the wine to age slowly to reach its full complexity. A room with too much humidity will cause mold to form and damage the label on the bottle. A room with seventy percent humidity is desirable so the cork won’t dry out. If the cork is allowed to dry out it will shrink allowing air into the bottle and oxidizing of the wine will occur. This is also the main reason wine racks store bottles on their sides to keep the corks wet and the oxygen out. Try to hang it on a wall that does not receive direct sunlight or where there is much vibration. A room that is dark, cool and order free will help keep your wines from spoiling.

There are a multitude of styles, sizes, materials and designs that can inspire even the occasional wine sipper. Whether you like to keep bottles for personal use, cooking, special occasions or as a collector you will need a wine rack to store your bottles. These functional attractive racks make a nice home look fantastic.

Depending on your needs you can get a wine rack that will store anywhere from one to hundreds of bottles. There are lower end wine racks that start around ten dollars to the more ornate racks that can hold many bottles of wine anywhere upwards of one thousand dollars. There are wine rack kits available that you can make yourself. These kits are usually less expensive and they come in the same variety as the assembled racks.

There is a diverse selection of wall mounted wine racks that will fit everyone’s decor. Here is a list of some of the materials you can choose from: wrought iron, metal, copper, plastic, wood, leather, glass and stainless steel. There are also some very unique designs at your finger tips to choose from. There are wine tubes, trees, shelves and racks that can be hung from either the wall or ceiling.

The wine tube is usually made out of metal with holes drilled into it. You stick the neck of twelve bottles into these holes and they are held vertically until you need them. The labels can placed so that your collection can be viewed hands free. The vine wall rack brings the vineyard into your home and gives you the sensation of your wine right from the vine. This vine like hanging rack holds four bottles neck downward with metallic leaves as decorations. There is a rainbow wine rack that holds five bottles cork down so they never dry out. The one I have in my home holds my favorite wine and stemware below it.

The installation can be achieved quickly and easily with simple directions and a couple of common household tools. Just make certain you mount them so that their weight is supported by the strong studs inside the wall.

Wall mounted wine racks allows your wine treasures to stay drinkable and be a work of art. They are becoming increasingly popular and for that special person be that perfect gift.

Relax, pop the cork go on line and start your search so you can display your treasures.

Enhance Your Wine Cellar With a Quality Handcrafted Wine Room Door

Monday, December 15th, 2008
Ben Adams asked:

A wine cellar needs temperature and humidity control. Good insulation, a vapor barrier and a climate control system are all major components, but a big part of climate control comes in selecting the right wine room door. The wrong choice can force your wine cellar refrigeration system to work more and allow undesirable warm air inside your wine room, nullifying the rest of your cautious wine room construction and design.

The correct wine cellar door maintains a seal on the entryway when the door is closed, allowing the wine cellar cooling unit to circulate temperature and humidity-controlled air through the total wine room without battling with air leaking into the room from outside the door. Whether you buy a pre-made standard door, or have one built to your desired specifications, all good wine doors have specific qualities that make them perfect for the climate control demands of your wine storage room.

Wine Cellar Door Construction

Custom wine cellar contractors recommend using exterior grade wine doors, which are powerful enough to withstand temperature fluctuations and keep outside air from trickling in. An excellent exterior grade wine cellar door should be weatherproofed and acclimatized to the level of temperature and humidity in the environment where it will be used; the humidity factor should not be ignored when picking a door. The recommended humidity for a wine room falls roughly between 50% and 80%, with 70% being the target level. If a wine room door can’t survive 70% humidity without warping or additional issues, it isn’t worth the money you paid for it.

Wooden wine doors should have rock-hard construction; by no means use a cavernous door as the entrance for your custom wine cellar. If you use a glass wine cellar door, it should be double-paned to help keep exterior air out. The recommended thickness for wine room doors varies according to who you ask, but the bare minimum you should install for your wine cellar is one and three-quarter inches. If your wine cellar door is accessible to children or if you just want some extra security for your wines consider adding a lock to your door specs.

Wine Room Door Materials

Wine cellar doors are available in a variety of materials; wood, glass, even wrought iron. Options consist of standard doors, carved wood doors or carved wood and glass. You can also get beveled glass doors or wine cellar iron doors.

When purchasing a wine cellar door, the condition of your wine cellar may dictate your purchase to a certain point. Is the wine room already built? Do you need to buy a door to fit your existing entryway? Or do you need a complete set with the door, doorjamb, weather stripping included in a package? Wine cellar doors may come in “door-only” versions or as pre-hung doors. A pre-hung wine room door comes to you installed into a frame which you set up into the entryway. Pre-hung doors speed up the installation process if you are doing the work yourself, but you may need an extra set of hands to help get the door in position and correctly attached.

Some wine cellar doors contain optional wrought-iron attachments which are set up on top of your door once it has been installed in the opening, but these don’t have anything to do with climate control issues in your cellar; the wrought iron add-ons are purely decorative. If you add these ornamental designs, it is vital to fasten them securely to the door to eliminate the potential for damage to the lacquer finish of the wood.

Wine Cellar Doors vs. Entryways

Many wine cellar door manufacturers offer custom-designed and built entryways. What’s the difference between an entryway and a wine room door? With a custom entryway you are having the entire section of door, doorjamb and related construction included in the package. This can allow for the construction of a more stylish look for your cellar and offer some additional custom options for the area. If you order the door only, you can set it up in your existing entryway, which is helpful for situations where you are already happy with the surrounding wine cellar construction.

Miscellaneous Concerns

Wine cellar doors should come with a threshold, door sweep and perimeter seal. These seals permit the door to be weather-stripped on all three sides to keep out drafts when the door is shut. Weather stripping is a necessity for the entrance to your wine room, or else your wine cooling system works less efficiently and your climate controlled air will move into the area outside the wine cellar.

Are you buying a custom wine room door? You will need measurements of your door jamb or entryway and you must decide whether you want handles or locks. Some vendors will not supply locks or pre-drilling. If you want to install a lock in these cases you will have to do the job yourself based on the design specifications of an exact lock.

Sometimes the direction your doors open might be an issue. When deciding which way your wine room doors should hinge, think about the placement of your wine racking or accessories around the doors, and how wide you need to open the doors should you need to add in a crate or case of wine bottles. If you need more clearance than the inside of your wine room can provide, make sure your doors can swing open to the outside, and don’t forget a doorstop or additional add-on to prevent the doors from striking the wall.

A wine cellar door is a significant part to your wine room. Selected wisely the doors can help your wine cellar work properly and create a great first impression to your visitors.

When can I bottle my homebrew elderberry wine?

Monday, December 15th, 2008
Gavin W asked:

I did my primary fermentation of the wine at the beginning of Sept, and in three months it has been racked twice. The wine’s specific gravity is 990 and there is very little lees at the bottom of the demijohns. When can I bottle the brew? Also, do I need to add stabilising powder? Some recipes say yes, others don’t mention it.
