Doug Nourse asked:

One of the more common storage methods often used in warehouses is known as pallet racking. This is when pallets containing goods are loaded on top of each other in an orderly manner. It is also a method of ensuring that goods are shifted around securely from one location to the other. However, racks are used for much more than the aforementioned purposes and are often designed in different shapes and sizes to suit the intended function, functions that are utilised a lot closer to home than one thinks - not by a business, but by the average everyday consumer. You’d be hard-pressed to find anyone who doesn’t use a rack in some shape or form at least once or twice during the course of their day, whether they’re aware of it or not. Racking is more a part of our everyday lives than some of us may realise. Meet Susan, a 25 year old medical student. It’s 6.45am and she’s up. She picks out one of her favourite jazz numbers off the CD rack and pops it in the player as she yawns her way to the shower. Grabbing her towel off the towel rack, she sings very badly to herself. She stares at the shoe rack. The flat brown pair it is, then. Quickly grabbing her medical journal off the magazine rack and her brolly off the coat rack, she’s out the door in 20 minutes flat.

If all the racks we used suddenly upped and disappeared, we’d be left with a lot more clutter and disarray than we bargained for. Without racking, plates would lie in a hopeless dishevelled heap on our kitchen worktops, the spaces in dishwashers wouldn’t be used quite as efficiently, and bicycles would either have to lean against nearby walls or invent their own gravity to hold themselves up without the friendly shoulders of bike racks to lean on. Towns like Amsterdam, where there’s a big bicycle culture, would be in a quandary. Lorries in transit would shiver nervously down the motorway without rack support for the pallets in the back of their vehicles; and similarly, warehouses wouldn’t be able to utilise their storage space half as practically (or safely) as pallet racking enables them to. And can you imagine going to the gym, all those weights without racks to hold them in place? Weight lifting would not only be a pretty impractical thing to do (unless you had a training partner), it would present a serious health and safety hazard to the individual.

It’s just gone 7pm. Susan walks through the door after a long hard day at work. Tossing her keys on the work-top, she makes a beeline for the last bottle of Chianti from the wine rack - treating herself to a well deserved mouthful as she slowly sinks into the sofa. Racking represents a degree of order in a chaotic world. It’s simple but essential; practical assembled pieces of design that work with our needs, not against them

Is it totally bad to store your wine at 70-73 degs?

Friday, February 19th, 2010
Nate V asked:

I did some reading on this and I realize that it ages it really quickly. But is that really such a bad thing? Doesn’t that just cut the amount of time I have to wait? Also, I don’t drink a lot of wine, so will I even be able to tell the difference? The reason I ask is because I have a wine rack in my kitchen that isn’t temp controlled and the necks of the bottles are exposed to the light. For a casual wine drinker is it ok for them to sit for a year or so in my makeshift wine rack.

Should I continue and rack, or dump my wine?

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010
Otherperson1ol asked:

Primary fermentation just ended so I opened up my container to transfer it to secondary fermentation. I decided to take a sniff to see how it smelled, which apparently was a terrible idea. I couldn’t even get a good wif of it because a nose started burning, ALOT. I’m not sure if this was just because of the CO2 gas that’s filled the airspace in the container or it was because the wine went bad. It doesn’t look particularly bad, It’s fairly clear and there’s no mold at the top.

Please help, and thanks for your time.

3 Major Issues to Select the Best Wall Mounted Wine Racks

Saturday, February 13th, 2010
Jessica Ackerman asked:

“You Got the Right One, Baby.” Musician Ray Charles made the song famous in Diet Pepsi’s TV ads during the early 1990s. When buying a wine rack, how do you know if you have the “right one?” It is important to search for a wine rack that will best meet your particular needs. While certain racks may work well for your friends and relatives, they may not be ideal for you. Here are some tips to consider, when searching for the perfect rack (for you):

1. Consider the purpose of your wine rack

You can place it in various rooms of your home, including:

• dining room

• entertainment room

• family room

• kitchen

• living room

Determine if you mainly need a rack to store bottles, or to function also as decor for the room. For instance, you can use wall racks to add some pizzazz to virtually any wall of your home.

2. Consider various traits of the wall racks:

here are some traits to consider when examining wine racks:

Capacity: Make sure that the capacity meets your needs. For instance, wall mounted wine racks tend to have a capacity of one, two, or three bottles. If you select a standard-sized rack, ensure that it is large enough for the typical number of bottles you need.

Features:

For full-size racks, consider if the wine rack can store glasses and other accessories.

Size:

Verify that you have enough space to store and use the wine rack. In particular, there should be enough space to add and remove bottles. Consider a space-saving wall rack to hold your top 1-2 types of wines.

Stability:

This is certainly the most important issue when selecting a wine rack. Make sure that it remains stable when adding and removing bottles. Also, it should be stable whether you have one or several of them in it.

Style:

Ensure that both the material and the design of the rack complement the decor of the room in which it is. For instance, if you use a wall wine rack, it should match up with the other wall decor.

Strength:

Ensure that the manufacturer used quality materials to construct the rack. Also, verify that it used outstanding craftsmanship. Make these checks whether you examine full-size racks or wall mounted ones.

3. Consider the location of the wine rack

Location is an important consideration when you select a wine rack. Consider whether you have enough room for it, including a wrought iron one. Decide if you need a stationary or mobile rack. Contemplate whether you need it for storage or display. If it is for the latter function, then consider a wall wine rack. Finally, consider whether your bottle collection will grow.

When selecting a wine rack, you have several issues to consider. Considering the aforementioned issues will help you to narrow down your choices. Then you can select the “right one”!

Jean Bolton asked:

Let’s say your are getting married and you want your guest to get something that they would remember the wedding by or you are asked by a couple that are getting married to organize something like this. If you’re a wine lover then there is not much to think about, the present will be wine related. And your in luck because when the gift should be wine related then being unique is not that hard to accomplish.

Your guest will feel that you value them

You might think that all the gift ideas having a wine theme would be taken by now but that’s not the case. Wines and all the things related to it are so diverse that there are lots of unique combinations you can still think of. You should be thinking in solutions and not asking for more problems.

One idea could be to hand everyone that attends your wedding a wooden or iron, hand made mini wine rack. And if you go a step further you could make it complete with miniature wine bottles. Talking of unique wine gifts you could even have the mini wine bottles personalized.

Another idea would be to have little crystal or silver wine bottles made and have them attached to a key ring or on a small hanger for the women guests. Have them engraved with your names and the date of the wedding. Or you could give a vine leaf made out of all kinds of material, wood, crystal, etc. etc. again with your names and the date engraved.

A unique wine gift is not something that can only be given at a wedding, there are lots of occasions where it is more then appropriate to get such a gift. An anniversary, could be a wedding one, is another great time to do something with the wine theme. You could organize a tasting party and invite a close group of friends that attended your wedding.

The sky is the limit, well, probably your wallet or bank account is, but when you make a little effort this is what you can come up with, just imagine if you start thinking a little longer or with friends and family helping out with the process. Always keep two things in mind when you are thinking about what to get for the guests at your party.

A) It should be something that will remember people of the occasion

B) When people look at it after a while it should give them the feeling of reliving it all again

The gift should be unique in such a way that it sticks out in peoples memories when they see the object again. Wine is a perfect object to give to your friends and family at these kind of happenings.

Get your thinking cap on and start brainstorming, alone or with others, and you will see that there is still a unique wine gift out there that you can give at your wedding party or other joyful occasion.
