Home brew (plum wine) ready for racking, its still very cloudy?

July 13th, 2010 | Posted in Wine racks   Comments Off
Bertus asked:

Now i’ve gone to great lengths to make sure everything was sterile etc, I’ve also used pectic enzyme to destry as much of the pectin (which can cause clouding) as possible from the brew before I strained the mulch. It’s still very cloudy.
Now, i brewed some apple wine around the same time which has completely settled and looks quite clear and is also now ready for racking.
Do you think theres something wrong? I’m hoping/expecting it to settle quite well after I add the tablets to kill the yeast.

Any advice or info out there from ppl’s who’ve got some experience with home brews?
It’s been in the demi-johns for about 4months now. (?secondary, after i strained the fruit/airlocked bottles)
I’m aiming to have some ready for Xmas/new year, so hopefully it’ll all go well.
One more thing, will it still be ok to drink if its cloudy?

Wine store in NYC?

July 11th, 2010 | Posted in Wine racks   Comments Off
Danielle M asked:

Can anyone recommened what the best Wine Shop is in Queens, New York, as in greatest selection and prices? It’s tough to find out with a web search, and I’m really looking for a big place with a good selection instead of a liquor store with a few bottles on one rack. I know Manhattan has alot to offer, but is there a great place over the bridge? Thank you in advance!

a wine question?

metalscreamer1969 asked:

i have made several batches of wine using juice concentrate, just made first batch of wine with fresh fruit ( strawberry ) anyway just racked to secondary, didnt use enough sugar it is already too dry for my taste , when i rack again can i add some more sugar? it is a 1 gal. batch, only used 1 lb. sugar, should have used 2 or 3 ( used 4 lbs strawberries ) 1 can white grape juice concentrate. if this will help make it a little sweeter, should i add the sugar to a few cups of boiling water let cool add it when i rack again?or should i make another batch of extra sweet wine mix the two together when its time to bottle? being a beer brewer, making wine from just juice is boring for me, plus i have a constant supply of fresh fruit. thanks!

Making homemade wine no gas seems to be flowing through my air-lock?

July 6th, 2010 | Posted in Wine racks   Comments Off
Smitty asked:

I am making wine for the first time. I bought a complete kit, juice, etc. I followed the directions to a tee. I just racked it into my glass carboy attached the air-lock and the bung. Unfortunately, I don’t have any bubbles coming up through the airlock. How could there not be any carbon dioxide (I think) coming out? Is this going to have a huge impact on my wine?
Any input is appreciated.

Alyssa Davis asked:

Do you like Do-It-Yourself (DIY) projects? If so, then construct your own wine rack. It provides you with an easy way to store and display the various wines that you have. Also, building it is probably much easier than you might expect. Furthermore, DIY projects can save you a ton of money, which you could dedicate to increasing your selection of wines. Here are the simple tips to build a rack:

1. Choose the size of the wine rack that you want to build

Wine racks can range in size. They can be small enough to fit on a wall in your home. Mid-size win racks fit easily onto areas such as your kitchen countertop. Meanwhile, larger racks sit on the ground, as a bookshelf would. This type of wine rack can store the greatest number of bottles.

2. Create a wine rack that holds the bottles horizontally

Why is this important? There are a few benefits. Firstly, this helps to keep bits of debris from entering the bottle’s neck. Also, keeping the bottles horizontal will ensure that the bottle’s cork will remain wet.

3. Construct a wine rack that is a minimum of 7 deep.

You may consider buying wall racks if you struggle with DIY projects. If not, remember that the deeper it is, the less the bottles will protrude from the wine rack. This will make the rack sturdier.

4. Select certain slots to accommodate a high number of bottles

After deciding on how many bottles you want to store, determine which type of slot you want to use. The two best types are the flat-box slot and the diamond-slot. These types of slots are ideal, as you can hold many bottles in a single slot. If you are trying to maximize the number of bottles you can squeeze into a small space, then these types of slots are ideal.

5. Consider slots large enough for a single bottle, for convenience

If you want to access your wine bottles easier and faster, then take this step.

6. Screw holes before installing screws

Do this to avoid cracking the wood of the wine rack, as you drill holes into it.

7. Consider buying a wine rack if necessary

If you lack the time to build your own rack, then consider buying it. These racks are available in a wide variety of styles, sizes, and bottle capacities.

8. Verify that your wine rack is sturdy

In particular, when creating slots for multiple bottles, ensure that the rack can support full bottles’ weight.

9. Use the right wood if the wine will sit in a cellar

This will prevent the wood from experiencing rotting, mildew, etc.

10. Add slots in your wine rack, for glasses

This will further serve as a space-saver.

One of the most practical wine racks remains a wall decoration one. However, if you are a DIY fan, then build your own wine rack!
